Psycho DeVilles, Redmouth Coming to the Sipsey

July 27, 2010

The Psycho DeVilles recently released their CD "Nightprowler" on iTunes...

Big weekend for live music fans, starting this Thursday Night as we welcome Rockabilly pioneers the Psycho DeVilles into town. They have a big following in Atlanta, and we are excited they are making their way down I-20 for a great night of music. Things you can expect from a Psycho DeVilles show: major sideburns, an abundance of hair pomade, guitar licks, a burning stand-up bass. What else? The Sipsey Tavern is commemorating the evening with $2 Well Drinks and $4 Jaeger Bombs all night long. This is going to be an excellent Thursday night. Check out their myspace page here, and look out for their new CD “Nightprowler” on iTunes.

Friday, the eclectic vibe continues, as blues rocker Redmouth comes to town. A fan in Mobile described Redmouth with “You’re kind of like Iggy Pop with a slide guitar.” That fits. Redmouth is high off an Estonian music website voting for their latest video as the song of the week. So, they’re big in Estonia, reminds you of Iggy Pop, has a great blues sound. Either you’re sold at this point or you’re not. Check

If you like Iggy Pop and the Blues, chances are you'll like Redmouth

out the Redmouth myspace page here in any event. The Dirt Scab Band opens, bringing their unique swamp country sound down from Nashville. You can get a preview here.

Saturday brings local talent Jason Speegle and his band, and Sunday night we’ll have a new lineup for Arturo’s Sunday Night of Musical Exploration. If you haven’t made it to the Sipsey yet, do yourself a favor. Or do us a favor and tell your friends about Birmingham’s latest dive bar and music hall. You can become a Facebook Fan here. We’ll see you soon!

Sunday: Diva Night

July 23, 2010
by SLS

The Divas always come out for Arturo

Live music lineup this weekend: Local bluegrass act Red Mountain Family Band is slated for Friday night and Roosevelt Franklin come out on Saturday. Should be a good time.

Sunday, Arturo has a head to head Diva showdown. Laura Stansell of Black Jacket Symphony notoriety joins Arturo, followed by a set featuring Montgomery songstress Kimberly Mangum. But Arturo is quick to point out that this is not a “clash of the divas” but rather an altruistic celebration of womanhood meant to foster well-being across the planet.

Also, come out for a change of pace when the Celtic Monthly Session stops in at the Sipsey (Sunday, 5 P.M.). This will be a great forum for discussing Celtic music as well as subjects like “how to appreciate ‘Braveheart’ now that Mel Gibson is officially a lunatic.” Good times as always. See you this weekend.

Happy Birthday Power Bill…

Every bar has regulars. We’re no exception. Tonight we’re celebrating the birthday of Mike, aka Power Bill.

Mike is like a lot of our customers–funny, doesn’t take himself too seriously, likes beer and the occasional shot. Rachel, his long-suffering girlfriend, is usually by his side. And he’s at the bar a lot–his nickname comes from the fact that his monthly contributions roughly equal our power bill.

So if you’re free tonight, come out and buy Mike a PBR and enjoy the company of a true American. We’re glad you’re a fan of the Sipsey Tavern Mike, because it would suck to drink in the dark.

Richard and Julie at the Sipsey–Sat. July 17th

Richard Smith brings his award-winning sound to the Sipsey Tavern.

It’s not every 11 year old kid that gets on stage with a guitar in front of 1,000 people with his idol. But Richard Smith was not only a fan of Chet Atkins, he was a guitar prodigy. And after they played a few songs, Richard started taking requests from the audience and Chet just stood back to watch.

A native of Kent, England, Richard cut his teeth on classic American finger-picking legends like Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed, and he’s a virtuoso of nearly every style of music. His repertoire includes such disparate influences as Django Reinhardt, Les Paul and John Philip Sousa.

He performs with his wife Julie Adams, a cellist. They have played across the world, and have been increasingly in demand since Richard won the 2001 Finger Picking National Championship.

The show starts at 8pm this Saturday, July 17th. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Have you checked our music calendar lately? We’ve got a great mix of local musicians and regional acts coming to the bar as summer heats up. Get down to 5 Points to see some great live music this 4th of July weekend!

Modo's coming to town

Modo comes to town from Asheville, NC for a show this Friday, July 2nd. The indie band has been touring aggressively since their debut self-titled EP came out in 2009. The duo has created some nicely layered, classically arranged songs that merge elements of electro-pop with grunge and classic rock. You can check out Modo’s myspace page here.

On Saturday, July 5th, Huntsville’s only kabuki-themed surf punk band Dai Kaiju returns to the Sipsey Tavern. The instrumentalists put on a full-court live show, lot of energy, lot of noise, and some stage-diving–prepare to be attacked. You can see photos from the last performance on our flickr page. And check the Dai Kaiju myspace page. Dai Kaiju performs on Saturday, July 3rd.

Don't ask questions. Dai Kaiju plays this weekend.

Sunday brings an All-American round of Arturo con Amigos. Laura the amiga apparently finished a song from the floor last week, so apparently anything goes these days. Check Facebook for updates to Arturo’s lineup.

And our Live Music Calendar is updated regularly–you can follow us on Facebook and Twitter for more info on the Sipsey Tavern than you possibly need. We’ll see you soon.

Let’s get Celtic this weekend!

Great weekend for a Guinness–we’ve got a double-header of Celtic music with Jasper Coal on Saturday night and the laid back Celtic session on Sunday evening (usually starts around 5pm). The weekend starts tonight with regulars Voices in the Trees, a laid back ensemble and perfect for getting the weekend started.

Jasper Coal has been busy lately and we always look forward to their show at the Sipsey. They play the traditionals, they bring the pipes, they give you a good excuse to have another Jamesons.

Sunday we’ve got another lineup of Arturo con Amigos. Check Facebook for updates to Arturo’s lineup.

Also, come out Saturday at 1pm…we’ll have the World Cup match on the projector. For every goal team USA scores against Ghana, get a free Coors Light. We’re all about team USA. Bring your own vuvuzela. We want to see some reactions like this:

Cheers, America.

Checking in with Arturo and the Amigos…

Arturo's amigos the Scott Ward Trio playing tonight

The crowds on Sunday nights at the Sipsey have been growing as more musicians and artists have been finding out about our musical showcase Arturo con Amigos. Our resident Peruvian musicologist brings his keyboard and shares the stage with an array of some of the finest performers in the city.

“Sharing the stage with so many talented singers, drummers, guitarists–we all bring something unique to the show,” says Arturo. He moved to Birmingham from Kansas City and was inspired by some of the artists in the Midwest and the community vibe built around artists, musicians and performers.

The idea for a showcase night grew out of the relationships Arturo had with several local musicians, including Kendra Sutton, Laura Whitney Stansell, Adam Guthrie and others. The sets are loose and informal and the performers rotate and pick up different instruments. Some of it is rehearsed and some of it is improvised. Last week the Blue Ribbon Healers from Florida were in town, joined by Erin Mitchell, Mollie Garrigan, Dan Turner, Andrew Brasfield, Kurt McKenney, Matt Boyer, Omari, William Pratt and a few others.

A few of the many talented Amigos who join Arturo on Sundays.

The musicians are also regular performers at the Sipsey with their main bands. According to Arturo, the showcase is not an open mic, but a great chance to get on stage with other serious musicians. “We are always looking for talented players, contact me or the bar through the website or facebook to let us know you are interested.”

Other performers from the past few weeks include Christina Linard, Mark Underwood, September Reed, Nick Hill, Randall Stewart, and Doug Norton. Reggae artist B-Law Rodriguez and his band have made in onstage. And spoken word artists Shariff Simmons and Voice Porter have been onstage to share their work.

For updates, check the Sipsey Tavern Facebook page. The lineup changes week to week.

Old School Music Lined Up for Memorial Day Weekend

Paybacks returning to the Sipsey on Friday night.

Nothing like some All-American blues music for the weekend. Sipsey regulars the Paybacks bring their catalog of blues standards this Friday. On Saturday the Suburban Love Junkies stop in for their first time at the bar. The Birmingham band has been a fixture on the local scene, we’re happy to welcome them to the stage.

What do the Blue Ribbon Healers sound like? According to the Blue Ribbon Healers myspace page they’re like “a sonorous body with an old-timey heartbeat, the long, striding legs of west-coast honky-tonk, sultry, saloon-style curves, and a soul as deep and wild as the swamps of the Louisiana bayou.” The string band is ready to come out for a very unique set of music on Sunday. The Healers will be followed by Arturo and a variety of amigos.

Should be some great music this weekend…we’ll see you on the Southside!

New Music Coming to the Sipsey Tavern…

May 19, 2010
by SLS

Ladies and gentlemen...Dai Kaiju.

Thanks to everyone who’s come out and supported the Sipsey–especially all of the great musicians that have worked with us to help promote the shows and get the word out. So many people have been instrumental in bringing great music to the stage, and we appreciate all of your efforts (special props to Arturo and Ryan & Gretta). If you haven’t made it out to Sunday night’s showcase Arturo con Amigos, come check out some great new music from a talented array of singers and performers.

We’re excited to announce some new shows for May and June. Starting this weekend (May 20-23), on Friday Austin’s Bloody Stiletto comes to town. They formed a year ago and they bring the noise. Locals Dead City Diary open. Cincinnati’s Ampline brings hard-charging punk rock to the stage when they play a twin bill with Huntsville’s Dai Kaiju . Both bands forgo a singer to play some inspired instrumental sets. Show is Sat. May 22nd, Tim Tucker will kick things off at 9pm.

Sun Hotel, not afraid to rock the sweater.

Sunday, May 23rd is a full day of music starting at 5pm. We welcome in the Birmingham Celtic Music Scene for their monthly meeting. The members play traditional Celtic tunes with a wide array of instruments from the banjo to bagpipes. We’ll get the stage ready for Circuitree and Sun Hotel later that night. Sun Hotel is an indie band out of New Orleans. They’ve been aggressively touring and we are very happy to fit them in as they make their way across the South. They blog a lot about life on the road, check their website for videos and song clips at the official Sun Hotel website.

We close out May with house favorites the Paybacks and Suburban Love Junkies. Look out for updates on acts coming later this spring and summer–the Blue Ribbon Healers, Modo, Richard and Julie and many more.

Modo, indie rock out of Ashville NC, coming on July 2nd.

Thanks for supporting the Sipsey Tavern. Keep checking the website, facebook and twitter accounts for updates and drink specials. We are working to support live music on 5 Points. We always appreciate your suggestions and new bands. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

This Weekend: 90 Proof, Speedshifter and Renegades of Folk

May 6, 2010
by SLS

Another weekend of live music May 6-8, come check out some great bands starting TONIGHT! (Thursday).

90 Proof is a folk, country and rock hybrid, perfect for a Thursday night. They’re local, and you need to support your local musicians. And 90 Proof is a good band name. Admit it, you wish you’d thought of it.

Speedshifter gets on stage Friday night. They’ve been playing originals–rockabilly/outlaw country–and they do a god job of keeping the crowd entertained. Check this video from youtube:

Saturday we welcome Sipsey regulars the Renegades of Folk back. They will be playing with their full band, expect another great night of music from the Renegades. (Programming note: the Dirty Lungs were scheduled to play Saturday, but have been moved to a later date. Check back for details on when the DL’s will be at the bar).

Enjoy the weekend. Stay safe. Keep the good people on the Gulf and in Nashville in your thoughts. We’ll see you soon.
